IRS Document Apostille
We hand deliver IRS letters and documents, including EIN confirmation letters, to the U.S. Department of State, Office of Authentications in Washington, DC, so they come back apostilled or authenticated and ready to use abroad.
We are a private document service and are not affiliated with any government agency. The federal filing fee is included in our price.
How it works
A simple, tracked path from your mailbox to the Department of State and back.
Request the IRS letter or document you need from the IRS, such as an EIN confirmation letter or a tax related certificate, or use an original you already have.
Mail us the original IRS document. We confirm it has the signature and formatting the Department of State requires, then hand deliver it in Washington, DC.
We ship your apostilled or authenticated IRS document back to you with tracking, ready to send to the foreign bank, agency, or partner that requested it.
What you need to know
A few plain notes that help your document move through the process without delay.
- IRS documents are issued by a federal agency, so they must be apostilled or authenticated by the U.S. Department of State, Office of Authentications, not by a state office.
- The document should be an original IRS letter with a signature, such as an EIN confirmation letter, rather than a photocopy or a version printed from an online account.
- Do not have your IRS letter notarized before sending it to us. Notarizing a federal document does not help and can sometimes create extra steps.
- If your destination country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, your IRS document receives an apostille. If not, it goes through the longer authentication chain instead.
- Common reasons people apostille IRS documents include opening a foreign bank account, forming a company abroad, or handling tax matters with a foreign government.
- Turnaround is typically a matter of days after we receive your original document, since we hand deliver it instead of mailing it in.
Frequently asked questions
Which IRS documents can be apostilled
The most common examples are EIN confirmation letters, also called CP 575 letters, and certain tax residency or compliance letters issued directly by the IRS. If you are not sure whether your specific document qualifies, contact us and we will check it before you ship anything.
Can I apostille a printout from the IRS website
Generally no. The Department of State needs an original document with an actual signature from the IRS, not a printout or a copy of an online record. If you only have a digital copy, you may need to request an original letter from the IRS first.
Is an apostille the same as an authentication for IRS documents
They serve the same purpose but apply to different countries. If the country you are sending your IRS document to is part of the Hague Apostille Convention, you receive an apostille. If it is not a member country, the Department of State issues an authentication instead, and the document may need further steps at that country's embassy.
Do I need to notarize my IRS letter first
No. IRS letters are already issued by a federal agency, so notarization is not required for the Department of State to apostille or authenticate them.
How long does it take to apostille an IRS document
Because we hand deliver documents to the Department of State in Washington, DC, most IRS document orders are completed in a matter of days rather than the weeks it can take to mail a request in yourself and wait for it to be processed and returned.
Is the federal filing fee included in the price
Yes. Our price includes the federal filing fee charged by the Department of State, along with hand delivery and return shipping of your document.
